Telomerase Expression is a Biomarker for Stem Cells

Telomerase (mTert) is expressed in self-renewing embryonic stem cells, hematopoietic stem cells, germ cells, and induced pluripotent (iPS) cells. To identify and functionally characterize mTert-expressing cells, we have generated and validated a series of transgenic reporter mouse lines, including mTert-GFP and mTert-CreER. These models recapitulate endogenous telomerase expression and activity and were the first to allow for the prospective isolation of mTert-expressing cells, overcoming a significant barrier in this field.
